Laurie Lopes was born and brought up in Purley, Surrey, UK, the third of six children. She currently lives in West London with her husband and two cats.

Laurie graduated from Royal Holloway College in 1990 with an Honours degree in Modern History and Politics. A full time employee in local government, Laurie has a wide variety of hobbies and has travelled extensively in Europe and the Middle East. Countries visited include Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, Russia, Sweden, France, Spain, Italy and Portugal. She is also an avid cook, and loves wine, reading, photography, history and walking. Her main historical interest is the Spanish Civil War. She is also a soccer fan and follows Arsenal FC.
